PROFILE:
Andrew debuted in season 1999/2000 after coming through the junior
ranks at Mount Clear, starting with the Under 12's. He was a part
of the core group of successful juniors that won premierships in
the late 1990's. Back then, Vanders was a wicketkeeper, a sight
that would look very funny now, but today he plays mostly as a batsman
and has a 100 to his name, although his bowling is very underrated.
His big advantage is his size, standing well over 6ft tall, he sends
the ball down from a huge height and troubles most batsmen of all
grades that he bowls to in the nets. It came as a surprise to learn
that Vanders took his first 5 wicket haul this season vs North Ballarat.
Vanders has taken on the responsibility of captaining the 3rd XI
this season after spending the last couple of years floating between
the lower grades.
Vanders is always helping the Mounties on and off the field, often
called upon as a sub fielder when required and has taken some handy
catches in that role in the First XI. The club is very grateful
for the support he has shown through his businesses: Plinius Engineering
and Tower IT - the clubs current major sponsors. He was responsible
for building the portable practice net we now enjoy.
2008/2009 introduced
Vanders to captaincy, a job he described as "pretty easy"
after the Thirds were undefeated at the Christmas Break. He took
on more bowling responsibilities, capturing 28 wickets @ 18.61 and
lead the team with a relaxed and positive approach.
