PROFILE:
Hammer is one of Mount Clear's most passionate, hard working and
longest serving members. He is a product of the Mount Clear juniors
from the 1980's. He is currently running around in his 25th season
of senior cricket with the Mounties in his 40th year. His longevity
is a testament to the emphasis he put on his fitness early on in
his career, often disappearing into the State Forest behind the
oval for a long run before or after training. He is a leader on
and off the field and has been an active social and executive committee
member with the Mounties for as long as anyone can remember. He
has helped organise many trivia nights, annual balls and annual
reports. Without his help, and the patience of his family, the club
would not be the same.
Hammer's playing career stacks up next to the best that there has
been for the Mount Clear Cricket Club. He currently sits 3rd on
the all time run scorers list with over 7,000 runs, many of them
scored as an opener or number 3 batsmen. The majority of Hammer's
career has been spent in the 2nd XI except for a few short cameos
in the 1st XI. None better than his 1st XI highest score of 99 run
out in season 1996/1997 against Coronet Invermay at Mount Clear
No 1 when he took out the umpire in a mad scramble attempting to
cross the line for the magical 100th run. His partnership of 184
with Matt Clark that day is still the highest first wicket partnership
for the Mounties 1st XI. He has scored 7 centuries but could have
easily had a few more with a couple of unlucky scores in the 90's.
As a captain, Hammer always demanded 100% effort from his players.
He would lead from the front and drag his teammates along for the
ride. There is no better example of this than his performance in
the 3rd XI Grand Final of 2005/2006 when he achieved his highest
score of 177 and set up a first inning lead for the team. Through
out his career, Cameron has been well supported by his former captains
and mentors David Tuddenham and Steve 'Buzzard' Williams and his
father Rob who has only missed a handful of his son's 270+ games.
Hammer is showing no obvious signs of retiring, but has hinted the
right time will be when game number 300 comes up in a few seasons
time.
